Rotherham, South Yorkshire is a town with a long history extending back to Roman times. It is centrally placed among the gentle hills between the larger towns of Barnsley, Doncaster and the City of Sheffield. The area is well known for its industrial heritage and Rotherham boasts several tourist attractions and some lovely countryside. The town centre is modern with most buildings constructed during the last century. A program of regeneration is currently taking placed called Rotherham Renaissance. This will add to the broad range of shops in the city centre with some well known high street brands. The project also aims to foster more of a street culture with pavement cafes. Iron, coal and steel formed the basis of the industrial activity in the town for hundreds of years. The iron produced in Rotherham was renowned for being particularly hard and was much used throughout the Industrial Revolution and afterward. Steel also played a huge role in the fortunes of the town and its people even when the industry was declining in other parts of the country. Rotherham now hosts one of the most popular tourist attractions in South Yorkshire, the Magna Center. It is an interactive science museum built in an old steelworks. The center attracts school trips from far and wide and has also proved popular with adults. In addition to the theatre and lively nightlife in the town center there are lots of leisure pursuits on offer in the nearby Don Valley. The Meadowhall Shopping Center is one of the largest in Europe and can be reached from Rotherham in a few minutes on the train. The Don Valley also has the Sheffield Arena, Don Valley Stadium and Centertainment for concerts, films, bowling and other activities. Rotherham is a town with a distinguished industrial history and plenty of modern conveniences. It has excellent transport links, sitting just off the M1 motorway. The main tourist attraction is the Magna Center a fun place to learn about science.
